Kimura Sushi & Japanese Cuisine – Rupert Street

April 23, 2011

I wasn’t expecting much from Kimura knowing that it was on the side of the city that has practically all mediocre restaurants.  My assumption of the restaurant quickly changed to a good impression as soon as I walked in.  Named after the owner, Chef Kimura, the small but open concept restaurant is run with Chef Kimura and his wife.  You wouldn’t expect to see a restaurant like Kimura in that area, though I am glad they have something there finally.  Hopefully, other restaurants will follow suit.

My friend and I decided to order Omakase – leave it up to the Chef to decide what to serve us.  It’s not generally my preference but nice once in awhile.  This was during lunch as well and we didn’t call ahead.

Would go back for sure, next time I will order a-la-carte.  I recommend this restaurant.  Prices are reasonable and very good.  Chef Kimura is personable and it’s obvious he puts a lot of pride in each order that he plates.  There maybe many sushi restaurants in Vancouver – there’s one in every corner practically.  But there aren’t that many quality sushi restaurants.  And I would say that Kimura is one of those quality restaurants.

They have traditional dishes and sushi but their menu generally shows their specials.  If you want to order omakase, then it’s best to make reservations and advise them at that time.  Dishes will be prepared more suitable and creative for your tastebuds.
